Ramadan Adjustment: Jigawa Cuts Work Hours for Civil Servants

Jigawa State reduces working hours for civil servants during Ramadan 2026, citing welfare, productivity, and spiritual observance.

As Ramadan begins, Jigawa State has moved swiftly to ease the burden on its workforce. The government has approved a temporary reduction in official working hours for civil servants across the state.

The Jigawa State Government announced that civil servants will now close earlier throughout the Ramadan period. The directive, approved by Governor Umar Namadi, was conveyed in a statement signed by the Head of Civil Service, Muhammad Dagaceri.

Under the new arrangement, public servants will work from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday — replacing the usual 5:00 p.m. closing time. On Fridays, offices will operate from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., consistent with existing Friday schedules.

Officials say the adjustment is designed to reduce physical strain during the fasting period and allow workers adequate time to prepare for iftar and engage in spiritual activities. The government also expressed hope that the shortened hours would enhance morale and sustain productivity during the holy month.

In the state capital, Dutse, many civil servants reportedly welcomed the decision, describing it as thoughtful and timely. Some noted that the change would improve work-life balance during Ramadan while enabling them to fulfil both professional and religious obligations more effectively.

The Head of Service further encouraged workers to use the period for prayers for peace, economic growth, and stability in Jigawa and across Nigeria.

Jigawa joins other northern states that traditionally adjust work schedules during Ramadan, reinforcing the balance between public service and religious observance. For many civil servants, the move signals recognition of both welfare and faith during a spiritually significant period.
